Paint.net นั้น เป็นโปรแกรมสำหรับใช้ตกแต่งภาพแบบเดียวกับโปรแกรม Photoshop แต่จะมีอ็อปชันหรือลูกเล่นบางอย่างน้อยกว่า แต่ก็มีความสามารถเพียงพอสำหรับการใช้งานทั่วไป และที่สำคัญ คือ โปรแกรม Paint.net เป็นฟรีแวร์ (Freeware)

ปัจจุบันทีมผู้พัฒนากำลังดำเนินการพัฒนาเวอร์ชัน 3.50 ซึ่งเป็นเวอร์ชันที่ทำการปรับปรุงการทำงานในหลายด้าน รวมถึงการทำงานร่วมกับ Windows 7 ระบบปฏิบัติการแบบเดสก์ท็อปตัวใหม่ของไมโครซอฟท์ มีกำหนดการออกเวอร์ชันเสร็จสมบูรณ์ในเดือนตุลาคมปีนี้
